Leawood Pansies

How pansy assed are the people of Leawood?  THEY COMPLAIN ABOUT BBQ SMELL!  Give me a freaking break you out of touch elitist pricks.

We aren't talking about chemical plants, garbage dumps or water treatment plants.  ITS BBQ!

AMERICAN ROYAL GRAND CHAMPION

Congratulations to the Pork Pullin Plowboys out of Blue Springs, Mo.  It is a shame that most of the headlines going into this years Royal were about the international teams instead of the locals.

KC BBQ UPDATE - ADAMS RIB

If you haven't checked out Adams Rib on 87th street yet then you are missing out on some great food. I went for the first time on Tuesday of this past week and it was so good that I had to take the family there again yesterday. This place is a pleasant change from the usual BBQ in this town.

I recommend that you get the Baby backs, sweet potato fries, beans and use their spicy sauce.

BBQ & JAZZ

Last week I made a post that discussed what Kansas City is known for and what a huge lie it is. Two of them happened to be BBQ & Jazz Music. After I made this post I got emails and nasty comments saying that I was completely wrong. Well, it turns out that even when you combine 2 of the supposed things that KCMO is known for nobody in this town cares.

Don't for a minute fall for the recession crap. I did some checking around and other towns aren't having any problems with their events.

NOW IT IS PERSONAL!

It is one thing for shootings to happen at the given spots in the metro but it is another for it to happen at a freaking BBQ JOINT! These places are suppose to be sacred. Can't we make BBQ joints bullet free zones?

IT IS TIME TO TAKE BACK THE STREETS!

OKLAHOMA JOES BBQ STORE

This is a heads up for Bull E. Vard. I posted your comment and then lost track of what post it was in. The BBQ store is attached to the OK Joes joint in Olathe at 119th & Strang Line. Great alternative to the over priced Smoke & Fire.

BROBECKS BBQ PART 3

I went to this place again (3rd time) in hopes of finding a higher quality of food than the previous 2 visits and all of those in my group were disappointed. They have gotten a little bit better but not nearly enough to make this place a "must eat" BBQ joint. The sausage was decent, the ham salad app was pretty good and the ribs were just average. The only thing that saves this place is the quality of service.

While they are no longer an avoid at all costs type of place they still fall short of making the top 20 list.

AVOID FAMOUS DAVES P&L DISTRICT

Saturday night my wife and I went to the P&L district for dinner before my sisters graduation. We set out to try something new but due to time constraints we ate at the first place that could seat us right away, Famous Daves. The food and atmosphere were great.......but I will never go back. Little did I know that what while we didn't have to wait an hour for a table the service would be so poor that it would of been faster to wait some where else.

I have never had worst service at a restaurant in the Metro . This place was so poorly run that I thought for sure that the manager must sit on the KCMO school board and the waiter was the police chief. It was so bad that it was funny. I thought for sure that we were on Punk'd.

This is an avoid at all cost place until management changes.

QUICK HITS

Not looking good in the burbs.

1. These two idiots made it a whole 3 blocks before crashing the car that they jacked. I hope those 3 minutes were worth the 10 years that you will be getting.

2. Lee's Summit woman shot by ex boyfriend. Either she was a skank that cheated on him or he was a psycho. I am going to have to go with a combination of both.

3. Knives seem to be the affordable option nowadays when it comes to attempted murder. The gang bangers of this town need to form a bullet coop.

4. Lenexa wannabes want to be like the Varsity in KCMO and have switched to knives.

5. House was burnt but how were the ribs?

THE GREAT BBQ DEBATE

I haven't had much time to blog lately but that should all change starting today. In my downtime I have picked up a new stalker. The funny thing about this stalker is that of all the controversial subjects I cover on this blog, this guy who chooses to post anon is a defender of Brobecks BBQ. Seriously, this is the cause that this guy champions. The defense of crappy sub standard BBQ will not be allowed on this Blog. That is rule #132. Rule #4 is that if you post anon chances are it won't get published.

BUT since BBQ is a passion of mine I will address a couple of simple items that MR. anon (in lenexa, yeah I got your info) is drastically wrong in.

1. A lot of Smoke doesn't equal flavor - Any clown that has ever competed in or been part of a competition knows this. A good place to get information about such matter is the KCBS. Too much smoke dries out the meat and takes away from the meat flavor. If I didn't want to taste the meat and the seasonings then I would eat a piece of burnt hickory or smoke a pack of Camels.

2. It is odd that a place that over smokes its meat never has smoke coming out of the building. I agree. My friends and I have been trying to figure that out for ourselves. That could be the problem. They could be trapping to much smoke in the pit.

3. Fries are important. Anyone that thinks that fries, beans, slaw, rings, corn etc... aren't important to a BBQ joint is crazy. How many times have you heard about the fries at Oklahoma Joes & Rosedale or the Rings & Beans at Jack Stack? The owners of these places take just as much pride in their side dishes as they do in the meat that they serve.

I do plan on going back to Brobecks in June for another review. I will have hoped that by then they will have figured out how to work their pit. Ask anyone that has gone to the several differnt Bryants locations through out the city and they will tell you that the stuff that is coming out of the original pit is far superior than what you get at their other locations.

TOP TEN BBQ JOINTS IN KANSAS CITY (revised)

Over the past few weeks as more and more people have been bookmarking this site I have been getting several requests for a BBQ top ten list that ranks them in order. So here they go, this time in order along with the most over rated/ worst BBQ in town.

1. Gates - There isn't even a close 2nd. Items to order: Short ends, fries, beans.
2. Oklahoma Joes - Best Pork & Fries in town. Items to order: Pulled pork, fries, beans, coleslaw. They also make a pretty decent chili
3. Bryants - Best meat in town - sauce is different Items to order: Burnt ends & Fries. Beans are just ok
4. LC's - Legend
5. Woodyard BBQ - Nothing is bad here and it is CHEAP
6. Jack Stack - Getting a little to fancy for a BBQ place but still the best sausage and beans in town.
7. Quicks BBQ - Legend
8. B.B.'s Lawnside - Great food, terrible location
9. Famous Dave's - It is sad that a National chain beats out many of our local places
10. ADAMS RIB - This is a new joint(2009) off of 87th street. AWESOME food.

On the bubble
Filling station BBQ, Johnny's Hickory house, KC Masterpiece, Wyandotte, Stonewall, Danny Edwards, Smoke stack, Stillwell Station

MOST OVER RATED BBQ IN TOWN
1. Smokehouse - Terrible sauce that drowns out the flavor of the meat.
2. Big Bubbas - I went back to give these guys a 3rd chance and was completely underwhelmed. If you are in Olathe GO TO Johnny's BBQ, it is your only safe bet besides Oklahoma Joes.
3. Rosedale - The meat there is terrible but they have incredible fries
4. Smokin Joes - Another Olathe crap house but once again they have incredible fries.
5. 135th street BBQ - This might be the worst on the list.
6. Haywards - I have had deli meat that tasted more like BBQ than this place.
7. Brobecks - Getting better but not quite there. Another 6 months and the smokers will be up to the challenge.

The above mentioned 7 places are a complete waste of money when you compare them to the other choices out there.

LUNCH

My job is to entertain current and future clients which means that I have an expense account that I get to abuse on a monthly basis. This includes Golf, Royals Games, Gift Cards, Donuts, cookies and the most important thing, Lunch. Having free lunches at nice restaurants everyday use to be a nice perk. How many people get to eat where ever they want for free 4 days a week? One day I could be eating at the Plaza III and the next some good Sports Bar Food and then some BBQ.

After nearly 9 years of entertaining people it has become old. I actually hope that the clients will have to reschedule just so I can get some down time. It is tough to be "on" all the time and to continually make excuses for the people that work for me. I have an excellent client base and it is no longer necessary for me to "whine and dine" them, yet it is expected.

So I figured once a week I will post where I have eaten and what I had so I can reflect back at the end of the year on the variety of food I have had. So just to get caught up here is a list of places I have been in September.

1. Fox & The Hound
2. YaHooz - Town Center
3. Parabskis deli - Topeka
4. Glory Days Pizza - Topeka
5. 1924 Main - Downtown
6. Manny's - SW Blvd
7. Arthur Bryants - Downtown
8. George Brett's - Plaza
9. Hereford House - Downtown
10. Pierponts - Union Station.

Today I am heading back down to Manny's
